The impure nickel reacts with carbon monoxide at 50–60 °C to form the gas nickel carbonyl, leaving the impurities as solids.

Hey dear,

● CO in Mond process -
- Mond process is a method for refining nickel.
- As nickel carbonyl gas is formed in this reaction, it is also called the carbonyl process.
- Nickel is traeted with carbon monoxide to give nickel carbonyl gas which can be separated easily.
Ni + 4CO ---> Ni(CO)4
- Other impurities are left behind as solids.

* Nickel carbonyl gas on thermal decomposition gives pure nickel and carbon monoxide gas.
Ni(CO)4 ---> Ni + 4CO
