FOSSIL FUELS :

The plants and animals living on earth millions of years ago got buried deep inside the earth and were gradually converted under conditions of high pressure and temperature into fossil fuels. These fossil fuels are coal, petroleum and natural gas.

USES OF COAL :

▶️ It is used as a domestic and industrial fuel. When coal is burnt in air, it reacts with oxygen in the air to produce carbon dioxide this reaction is exothermic and a lot of heat is released. This it is used for cooking food and converting water into steam in industries.

▶️ It is used in thermal power plants for generating electricity.

▶️ Destructive distillation of coal leads to the formation of coke, coal tar, coal gas, etc. Coke is 98% carbon and is used as a reducing agent in metallurgical process.

▶️ It is used to prepare synthetic oil and synthetic natural gas.

USES OF NATURAL GAS :

▶️ The major component of natural gas is Methane which is an excellent fuel there for natural gas is used as industrial fuel.

▶️ It is used to generate electricity in thermal power plants.

▶️ In the form of CNG, it is used as a fuel to transport vehicles which is more pollution free, as compared to diesel and petrol.

▶️ It is used to prepare hydrogen which is further used for the manufacture of fertilizers.
