• The slave codes were laws in the "Southern states" which governed enslaved people, also named   Negro Laws/black codes Since colonial times, such laws have existed. One of the codes aimed at stopping a slave revolt, the most feared by white Southerners. This is why slave codes forbade the compilation of large numbers of enslaved people. The codes also allowed slave persons to write passes prior to leaving the property of the slaveholder. The slave codes instructed slaves to read/write a crime. "White Southerners" feared a rebellion could begin from an educated slave. They felt it would be less likely to revolt against an enslaved individual that could not read & write.

• Plant owners, almost always men, frequently travelled to make a reasonable deal with traders. Their wives took over their households and controlled them. They watched and often managed  the enslaved plantation workers. Women also even held the financial records of the plantation. Maintaining a plantation has many jobs. Some slaves cleansed the kitchen, cooked, did laundry & sewing, & also served food. Smiths, carpenters, shoemakers, or weaver taught others. Some animals still tended. However, the bulk of African Americans enslaved were field workers. They used to work  from "sunrise to sunset" to plant, tend, and harvest crops. An overseer/plantation manager, supervised them.

Underground Railroad

• The slaves  opposed escaping their masters. They also tried to pursue family members on other plantations. Often they fled to avoid punishment. Slavish "African Americans" also tried to leave for North independence. It was really hard to get to the North. 2 "African American" leaders included  Frederick Douglass & Harriet Tubman had however succeeded . Most prosperous people fled the Upper South. The "Underground Railroad", a network of "good homes" owned by people who are against slavery might helped the slaves to escape.

Spiritual

• Many African-Americans who were slaves practiced traditional African religion. However, some supported the prevalent Christian faith in the United States. Christianity was a religion of redemption and rebellion for poor people. The slaves begged for their freedom. They shared their faith in spiritual, religious folk songs in African America. Spirits contributed to the joy of oppressed people — but grief was also felt here on Earth. Slave people used spirituals as a way to secretly interact with each other.
