To find:

Usha's present age

Solution:

Let's assume "U" years as Usha's present age and "R" years as Rita's present age.

Since Usha is twice as old as Rita, so we can form the equation as

U = 2 × R ...... (i)

Usha's age 3 years ago was "U - 3" years

Rita's age 3 years ago was "R - 3" years

Since 3 years ago Usha was 3 times as old Rita, so we can form another equation as

U - 3 = 3 (R - 3)  

⇒   U - 3 = 3R - 9

we will substitute the value of U from eq. (i)

⇒   2R - 3 = 3R - 9

⇒   9 - 3 = 3R - 2R

⇒ 9 - 3 = R  

⇒   R = 6 years ← present age of Rita

Now,

By substituting the value of R in eq. (i), we get

U = 2 × R = 2 × 6 = 12 years

Thus, Usha is 12 years old now.
