Using a 50-50 mixture of deuterium and tritium scientists at Princeton university in usa have produced a world record setting burst of fusion energy equivalent to three million watts (3×10^6W)of power on December 10,1997.The power output in this experiment lasted only for 4 seconds.The princeton group expects to increase the power of its reactor to 10 million watts very soon.This raises the prospects for abundant and cheap electrical power in future.
QUESTIONS:
(i)calculate the amount of energy in joules produced in the experiment explained in the passage.
(ii)under what condition of pressure and temperature does the above process take place.

Answer:

Part i)

Total energy released is

E = 12 \times 10^6 J

Part ii)

This is the reaction in which it releases large energy so this is under the condition of high pressure and high temperature

Explanation:

Part i)

As we know that the power produced in the reactor is

P = 3 \times 10^6 W

the power lasted for t = 4 s

now we know that

Energy = (power)(time)

so we have

E = 3\times 10^6 \times 4

E = 12 \times 10^6 J

Part ii)

This is the reaction in which it releases large energy so this is under the condition of high pressure and high temperature
