The Maori are a Polynesian people who settled New Zealand sometime around 1200. They were organized into villages headed by chiefs. Warriors were held in high regard. Before battle, they danced the Haka, which was meant to intimidate opponents. They were fishers, hunters, and farmers. They kept an oral tradition, passing their history and stories down through generations. Arts, including dance, carvings, and ta moko, were important to their society. Ta moko, or permanent facial and body markings similar to tattoos, is a rite of passage for many young men and women.
