Answer:

now we have to find the number such that

sum of two numbers is 42 and difference is 31

now

let one number be x and another be y

we get ,

x+y= 42

x-y= 31

anding the equations we get

x+y+x-y=42+31

2x=73

x=73/2 = 36.5

put x=73/2 in equation x+y=42

y= 42-73/2

y= 42-36.5

y= 5.5

checking answer

a = 36.5+5.5 = 42

b=36.5-5.5=31

also

(36.5)²-(5.5)² =42×31= 1302
