The Mariner called the wedding guest with his thin hand and began telling his story. The wedding guest has no interest in it. He shook himself and tried to go. But the glittering eye of the Mariner made him spellbound and he had to hear the old man’s story. He sat down on a stone and the Mariner started telling him his story.
The Mariner said that the ship set sail from the harbour. It was seen off with great shouts of joy. As it sailed out of the harbour it left behind the church, the hill and Lighthouse one after the other. Thus ship move South ward. While they were sailing the sun Rose on their left. All day it shone brightly and then it went down on the right. When they reached the equator the sun was right about them at noon.
As the Mariner and was telling his story the wedding guest heard the musical sound coming from the bride grooms house. He felt very restless and beat his breast. The images of the wedding feast started dancing before his eyes. He saw the bride in her wedding dress. She was looking as Red as a rose. He saw the Singers and musicians passing by the bride and bowing their heads to her. The wedding guest beat his breast again but he could not choose but hear the old man's tale.
Continuing his tale, the Ancient Mariner said that suddenly the weather changed and a Stormy wind began to blow. The strong wind drove the ship towards the South Pole. There they were surrounded by fog and high icy rocks on all sides. No living thing was visible there. Fearful sounds came from all around. But one day an Albatross came flying through the fog. The mariners welcomed it in the name of God. They served it food with all hospitality. Now the rocks of Snow began to break and the ship was able to move out of the land of snow. A good south wind started blowing which drove the ship towards the north. The Albatross followed the ship. It would come to the sailors when they called it for food or play. It would sit on the mast or on the mast rope when it was time for the evening prayers. Thus it continued for nine days.
Here the wedding guests saw a troubled look on the Mariner’s face. When he asked the Mariner why he was looking so troubled, the Mariner could only say that he killed the Albatross with his crossbow.
