QUESTION

Usually, while separating heavy, insoluble solids from liquids, the process of sedimentation is followed by decantation. Why?

ANSWER

Sedimentation the process of settling down of some insoluble solids( with density more than liquid) after some time .( which is mainly due to force of gravity and there insolublility)

Decantation the process by which the liquid (in which the precipitateis settled down) is separated in another container leaving the precipitate or solid dirt in the previous container

Ans: usually while separating heavy insoluble solid from liquid the process of sedimentation is followed by decantation because in order to remove this heavy insoluble solid (which could also be called precipitate) . And to get the liquid purified we need to separate it without disturbing the solid setlled down dirt during sedimentation and this separation is done by decantation process alone sedimentation and decantation purification couldn't be done . if sedimentation is done alone the dirt would remain in the same container only and if decantation is is done alone then the dirt would remain mixed in the liquid and we won't get the purified form of liquid.

hope this helps you

Answer:

This is because sedimentation makes the heavy insoluble impurities settle down at the bottom of the container. Then in order to separate the impurities, without disturbing the sediments, the liquid is poured into another container (which is decantation). Hope this helped!!!
