Bleaching powder is a mixed calcium hypochlorite - chloride. It is a white powder. It decomposes when it comes in contact with water. It has the odor of gaseous chlorine. It is used as -
1. Commercial bleach for wood pulp, textiles, oils and soaps.
2. It is used in laundering as a decolorizer and disinfectant.
3. It is used as a cleaning agent. It is used to clean the home or even electronic appliances like microwave and washing machine.
4. It removes water stains easily.
5. It can be used to sterilise instruments and get rid of algae.

dear friend, u know that chlorine is produced during the electrolysis of aqueous sodium chloride(brine).this chloride gas is used for manufacture of bleaching powder. bleaching powder is produced by the action of chlorine on dry slacked lime [ Ca (OH)2].Bleaching powder is represented by the formula CaOCl2.
uses of bleaching powder:-
1.it is used for bleaching cotton and linen in the textile industry for bleaching wood pulp in paper industry and for washed clothes in laundry .
2.used as an oxidizing agent in chemical industries.
3. used for disinfecting drinking water to make it free of germs.
4. used as a reagent in the preparation of chloroform.
