Atomic number of magnesium is 12 and it's electronic configuration is 2,8,2.
Valency is number of electrons gain or loss to achieve noble gas configuration I.e. fully filled octet.
Since magnesium has 2 electrons in it's outermost shell, hence it's valency is 2 I.e. it will lose it's 2 electrons to achieve noble gas configuration (2,8).
Now you might be wondering why is valency of magnesium not 6 (-6) I.e. why not magnesium gain 6 electrons to complete octet of it's 3rd shell?
The reason of not having -6 valency is that it is difficult to gain 6 electrons. Hence it loses it's two electrons to get filled octet.
