  • As we all know that complete valance shells are stable
  • All atoms strive for being stable
  • The number of electrons in valance shell in an oxygen atom is 6
  • So, for Oxygen to be stable it can give 6 electrons or it can take in 2 electrons, for being stable
  • As the energy required for taking in 2 electrons is lesser than the energy required for giving out 6 electrons.
  • Oxygen atom takes in 2 electrons and gets in stable state
  • Hence the valancy of Oxygen is -2
