.Van Helmont test experiment and he observe that weight of soil had hardly changed and he concluded that plant growth can not only due to minerals from the soil and concluded that water was the sole source of this increased weight. He was the first man who in correct the experiment.

Van Helmont tested this theory. He took one pot of dry soil and seedling of one plant, weighed it. Then he watered the plant for 5 years. After 5 years the plant gained weight of 73 kg but the weight of soil reduced very little. therefor Van rejected the idea that plant take food from soil only.
