There is always vice in vanity and this is what the author has tried to portray in the story with the characters Mrs Packletide and Luna Bimberton.
When people lose their objective in life i.e. self improvement and pursue shallow objectives i.e. trying to outshine someone else, they always end up facing dejection and misery in their lives.
