The following might be Velasco's thoughts while he was waiting for his rescuer.
- I'm all alone here, in the middle of the sea. What are the chances that I will die here? Even if there is a small chance, I might actually die.
- Will people remember me if I'm gone? Surely, there will be a time when I will just be a memory, and then there will come a time when even the thoughts about me will cease to exist.
- Have I done enough in the time I have existed, if I am to die here? Have I done anything that I am proud of? Surely, I raised my child to be a good person, honoured my parents and cherished my wife.
- Will my family cry a lot if they hear I'm dead? I wouldn't want them to cry so much, but there is no way I can relay that message to them now.
- I'm very hungry and thirsty, and I can feel my energy ebbing away. I really hope I don't die before help arrives.
