Hey dear here is your answer!!!!!

All elements which are known to exist are made up of atoms which contain a nucelus and electrons. These electrons are placed in shells. All elements try to achieve stable state by completing the shell either by gaining electrons or losing electrons through ionic bond or covalent bond.

Whether an element will gain or lose electrons depends over its valency. Valency of an element depends over its electronic configuration.

There are two ways to determine valency of an element:-

1. Through its electronic configuration :-

Elements try to complete their shells by giving away excess electrons or accepting deficient electrons.

If an element has 1, 2 or 3 electrons in its outermonst shell then it will give them away to achieve stable state.

If an element has 5, 6 or 7 electrons in it outermost shell then it will try to gain more electrons to achieve stable state.

If an element has 4 or 8 electrons in it outermost shell then it is said to be in a stable state.

Lesser the valancy is, the more easy it becomes for an element to achieve stable state.

2. Through the period it is located in a modern periodic table:-

Elements in periodic table are placed in horizontal rows called periods depending over its valency. The valency of an element is " 8 - 'period number' ".
