Vernacular press act was enacted in 1878 to curtail the freedom of Indian-language press. It was passed by Lord Lytton due to which the newspapers published in vernacular language were not given equal freedom with the rest of the Indian Press. This was basically to prevent the criticism against the British policies.

This Vernacular press act and the restriction and gagging on the press was removed and repealed by Lord Ripon. This action of Ripon went long way in conciliating public opinion.
