So, according to the question Vicky is 6 years older than Mary. Then,

x=6+y (Mark it as equation 1)

Five years ago:

Vicky’s age : x-5 ( as we took x as his

present age)

Mary’s age : y-5

In the question five years ago Vicky was thrice the age of Mary. Then,

x-5=3(y-5)

x-5=3y-15

x-3y=-15+5

x-3y=-10 (Mark it as

equation 2)

Substitute equation 2 in equation 1

(6+y)-3y=-10

6-2y=-10

6+10=2y

16=2y

16/2=y

8=y (Mark it as equation 3)

Substitute equation 3 (y=8)in equation 1

x=6+(8)

x=14

So, x=14, y=8

Therefore,

Vicky’s age is 14 years

Mary’s age is 8 years.
