VII. Read the passage and answer the following questions.
the dood
The Great Wall of China is said to be the one structure
built by man on earth which is visible to those who look at it
from the moon. The wall covers a distance of 1,500 miles from
the Liotung Peninsula westward to the last fortress in Central
Asia, it crosses all the northern provinces of China. But its
actual course, twisting and turning, sweeping across deep
valleys, covers over 2,000 miles. In the Eastern section the
height of the wall varies from 13 to 15 feet, and its width from
about 25 feet at the bottom to 25 feet at the top, where there
is a pathway wide enough for six horsemen to ride side by
side protected by parapets. When the wall was first built it had
about 25,000 towers, each 40 feet square and 40 feet high,
projecting from it, every few hundred yards with holes from
which the defenders (protectors, guards) could shoot at
attackers. Thousands of these towers are still standing.
Questions:
1. What is the passage about?
2. What is the height of the wall in the Eastern section?
3. How can you say that the width of the wall is quite big?
4. Give the opposites for: a) defender, b) great
5. What is the use of the holes on the towers?
