The Cholas were known as Imperial Cholas and became on the longest ruling dynasties in South India from 850-1200 A.D.

  • Vijayalaya who was from Uraiyur, captured the Kaveri delta which was under the control of Pallavas and thus started the beginning of rule of Chola Empire.
  • The historians believed that Vijayalaya Chola and his successors were have an ancestor from a Tamil King Karikala Cholan.
  • When Cholas came into power,  a tussle between Pallavas and Pandayas was already going on and being an opportunistic and visionary ruler, Vijayalaya took advantage of this and captured the Pallavas capital of Thanjavur. He also given the title of "Parakesarivarman"
  • Fighting many battles in his life, Vijayalaya successful established its kingdom and his successor ruled till 1200 A.D. in the medieval South Indian history.
