Bidhannagar, Durgapur, 29th January : 'The world is a stage and we are merely players in it', said the great Bard-of-Avon, William Shakespeare through the character Jaques in As You Like It. In the seven stages of man, Shakespeare asserts that old age is the second childhood. But alas! this childhood is not welcomed by the family members as they are not the father or mother of the old, instead they are their children and grand children.

In a recently concluded survey, five old people had randomly been chosen in the Bidhannagar locality. Three were octogenarians all males, and two septuagenarians, both female.

Unfortunately all five had the same tale of woe. Their conditions were more or less the same. Either their children had taken all their wealth and property and turned them into helpless, neglected ,unwanted members of the society, or their children had migrated to the big cities with their ambitions and never looked back at their aged parents.

Health wise all five were suffering from starvation and age related ailments. They were hardly taken care of. Each happened to be of a good social back ground but all had been reduced to penury by their extremely selfish children.

The survey proved to be a shocking revelation. Each questionnaire bore the same answer. If this is the treatment meted by the present generation to their senior generation the same cycle will be repeated when they grow old and the world will deteriorate from bad to worse.
