Here is your answer.
A modem is used to connect to the Internet via telephone lines.A computer works on digital signal whereas telephone lines carry analogue signal.Thus to connect to Internet,we need modem.

a modem is also called as modulator demodulator.it is a important thing for transmission of data in present days.
once you connect the computer or router to it,modem starts it's interaction with the available network of its own group.this happens when ur connected device is active.
the data is transferred in the form of small packets called TCPs.these aren't directly understood by device connected or caught.
a modem catches the signals sent by the tower and then modifies in a way such that we can understand it.it also sends the data to server in the form of TCPs.
