For all of Gandhi's work for Indian independence, he was never rewarded for his effort and the affect his movement had on the world. Gandhi was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1937, 1938, 1939, 1947, and 1948, but he never received the award. It is an unexplained situation, but there have been two major theories proposed: (1) the Norwegian committee at the time had a bias toward non-Europeans or (2) the Norwegian committee was afraid of creating diplomatic problems with the United Kingdom. Whatever the reason, many feel it should have happened, and many believed he would have won it in 1948. His assassination in January of 1948 prevented this from occurring.
