1. ahiṃsā (do not commit violence)

2. satya (do not tell a lie)

3. asteya (do not steal),

4. aparigraha (non-possessiveness)

5.brahmacharya (sexual continence or celibacy)

It is said that only 5th doctrine was added by mahavira, the other four were taken over by him from previous teachers namely, parsvanatha, the 23rd theerthankara.
