Mangal Pandey was the first soldier to be hanged for the 1857 revolt.
- An important role was played by an Indian soldier named Mangal Pandey in the events that took place just before the 1857 Indian uprising began. He served as a sepoy (infantryman) in the British East India Company's 34th Bengal Native Infantry (BNI) regiment. The Indian government released a postage stamp in his honour in 1984. A number of film projects have also depicted his life and deeds.
- Less than a week later, Pandey was brought to trial after making a full recovery. When questioned about whether he had used any drugs, he adamantly denied that any other person had encouraged him to mutiny and insisted that he had done so of his own free will. After hearing testimony from three Sikh members of the quarter-guard stating that the latter had instructed them not to arrest Pandey, he and Jemadar Ishwari Prasad were both given the death by hanging sentence.
- The death penalty was applied to Mangal Pandey on April 8. On April 21, Jemadar Ishwari Prasad was hanged to death.
Hence, Mangal Pandey was the first soldier to be hanged for the 1857 revolt.
