Temporary hardness is caused by presence of Calcium bicarbonate(Ca(HCO3) 2).It can be removed by boiling the water. When this happens, the soluble calcium hydrogencarbonate decomposes to form calcium carbonate (which is insoluble), water and carbon dioxide.
Ca(HCO3) 2 - - - - > CaCO3 + CO2 + H2O
Permanent hardness means hardness due to chloride and sulphate ions.i.e.CaCl2,MgCl2.It is removed by softening and demineralisation process.
