Long-term ethnic strife brought about the disintegration of Yugoslavia

Yugoslavia was born post World War 1 with states like Serbia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, and Macedonia. Certain states like Serbia and Croatia had history of conflict amongst them.

Yugoslavia was fairly peaceful under the leadership of Tito, who led the country for four decades.

Tito's death in 1980 marked the beginning of surfacing of ethnic and nationalist movements that were suppressed in his times.

Initially a rotating system of presidency was adopted post his death, but it did not succeed. Over a period, entire Yugoslavia was engulfed in civil wars and revolutions

On December 23, 1990, 88.5% population of Slovenia voted for independence.

It was though Croatia first to declare its independence on 25th June, 1991.

Bosnia- Herzegovina did the same in 1992.

All other republics did the same over the entire decade except for Serbia and Montenegro who formed the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.

Finally, first in 2003 reconstitution of these two republics in State Union of Serbia and Montenegro and then in 2006 with Montenegro finally ending its association with Serbia, the erstwhile Yugoslavia ended.
