Tolkien is famous for inserting his own voice into his novels, and in The Hobbit, he holds our hand through the entire journey, often using the terms “we” or “us” to describe himself and the audience. In the film, Tolkien's voice is replaced by Bilbo's in an introduction that sets the scene for the story that follows.
