Water and alcohol are mixed in the ratio 1:4. If the density of water and alcohol are 1g/cm3 and 0.8g/cm3 respectively. Find the density of the mixture. *

Answer:

Mix 1 cm^3 water  with 4 cm^3 alcohol

mass of water = volume * density = 1 cm^3 * 1 g/cm^3 = 1 g

mass of alcohol = 4 cm^3 * .8 g/cm^3 = 3.2 g

total mass = 4.2 g     total volume = 5 cm^3

density = 4.2 / 5 = .84 g/cm^3
