The primordial oceans were probably only slightly salty in the beginning. The water has become saltier as rain has fallen on the Earth and run over the land, breaking apart rocks and carrying their minerals to the ocean.

The main reason why it is saltier:

  • Rain replaces fresh water in rivers and streams, which prevents them from tasting salty.

  • The salt in the water comes from two places: land runoff and seafloor openings. The majority of salts dissolved in saltwater come from rocks on land. Because rainwater is slightly acidic, it erodes rocks when it falls on land.

  • The strange and amazing workings of hydrothermal vents are responsible for the ocean's chemistry (including salinity). Chemicals ejected from deep beneath the Earth's surface are ejected into the surrounding seas by hydrothermal vents.
