Water gas is a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen (not water). It is produced when steam is passed over red-hot coke (carbon). Water gas is so named because water (steam) is the usual source for its production. Both CO and H2 are inflammable gases, and so water gas is used as a fuel.
