Water holding capacity is the total amount of water a soil can hold at field capacity. Sandy soils tend to have low water storage capacity. Sub-soil constraints (acidity, hardpans etc.) can prevent crops accessing water in the subsoil.

Water holding capacity is a very important agronomic characteristic of soil. Normally, the Soils holds the generous amounts of water and less subject to leaching losses of the nutrients as well as soil applied pesticides.

It is true as the soil have the limited water holding capacity and reaches saturation point sooner when compared to the soil with a higher water holding capacity.
