Water on a smooth floor can make you slip which means water is also a lubricant. Can you think of reasons why oil and grease, and not water is used in machines as a lubricant ? Imagine a life without friction. Write the consequences both pros and cons.

ANSWER

Friction can be defined as the opposing force of motion that helps a body to stop after going a certain distance according to the conditions.

The reason why oil/grease is used in place of water =>

1)Because of oil and grease are better lubricants as compared to water.

2)Also, oil/grease are more slippery than water which is the most required property for a lubricant.

Some advantages in Life without friction are =>

1)There will be no wear or tear of machines and substances that produce heat due to friction.

2)There will be no loss of energy in the form of heat.

3)Extra friction makes it difficult to move an object, like sliding a box or across the floor or walking in deep snow.

4)There will be no more slowing down of moving bodies.

Disadvantages in life without friction are=>

1)The body which will be in motion will never come to rest due to no traction between road and body.

2)Many kinds of motion would not be possible due to lack of friction.

3)We cannot walk on the floor as we will continuously slip on the floor due to lack of grip.

4)The brakes of the car or vehicles will not work as there will be no friction between rims and brakes.

Answer:

Lubricants help to reduce friction and yes although water can reduce friction , it is not used as a lubricant .

Water is not used as the lubricating strength of water is not as high as oil which is thicker than water .

Hence water cannot act as a better lubricant than oil .

So oils are used .

A life without friction would have the following consequences :

Cons :

↪ We could not walk without friction ,we would simply slip if we would try to walk .

↪ We cannot stop a moving car or a moving truck by applying the brakes .

↪ The friction is absent and hence fires would not be caused .

↪ The friction which helped us in giving warmth while rubbing things .

↪ Static electricity would be existing then ( a big disadvantage ).

↪ A moving body will never stop .

Pros :

↪ The friction absence will help to make the efficiency of any machine 100% and machines will work to its full potential .

↪ There will be no thunder and lightning .

↪ There will be no forest fires .

↪ There will be no loss of energy by heating .
