Explanation:

Is the issue geographical integrity, social coherence via structured networks of institutions or something like national character—joint moral character, principles, precepts and practices.

As an ethicist, I’ll A2A on the moral part. Some ways of defending it is to take the initiative, being pro-active in showing integrity and promoting it. Turning whistleblowers into heroes under law would be a nice step. Teaching about moral exemplars and local heroes in class, having students intern with them through, perhaps, volunteer work would be another. Many local news programs actually have segments identifying local heroes and praising them.

Developing a system of incentives and social rewards, recognitions for integrity would be a third way. This would not be difficult at all. It could even be accomplished int he workplace, rewarding employees for commuinty service, company loyalty and good treatment of coworkers. This is already done at some of the most money grubbing corporations in Big Pharma, in large insurance companies, which often have a “social responsibilty” officer on their payroll. I was asked about possible interest I’d have in such a job when I taught in Hartford, CT, land of large insurance companies.

Last, it would be nice to have strict and vocal censuring organizations—the GAO (government accountability office) is an example—to call out public sleaziness and corruption. This would highlight corporate corruption as well, white collar criminality, anti-social policies for profit. Here Monsanto and Nestle would likely win front-row infamy.

The press, before Trump’s fake news gambit and Fox’s actual fabricated news reporting, was a true public watchdog in this area. It’s investigative journalism exposed one crooked operation and misrepresented program after another. And people took that very seriously. Trusted “journalists” like Walter Cronkite had credibility as “the most trusted men in America.” Then investigative journalism exposed the slanted corporate ownership of news conglomerates. Inegrity undermining integrity. But it was being lost anyway.

Answer:

Taking the initiative and being proactive in demonstrating and promoting integrity are some ways to defend it. Making whistleblowers heroes in the eyes of the law would be a good start. Another option would be to teach kids about moral exemplars and local heroes in class and have them intern with them through volunteer work.
