This is because air is gaseous in nature and its particles have space between the and our hand gets into that empty space while wood is solid in nature and the particles are tightly packed leaving no space for our hand to move.

The molecules in the solid are the most closely packed
There are strong forces of attraction between the constituent particles,of a Solid which hold them together in their fixed position.
Thus, we need karate experts to move our hand is solid block as the molecules of the block are tightly packed.
Whereas, we can easily move our hand in air ..... because the particles of air are losslessly packed and possess more movement.
