This is because of intermolecular forces.

Molecules of air are loosely packed and there is very less force of attraction between two molecules, therefore they have spaces between them because of which we can move our hand freely in air whereas in the case of wood block which is solid, Molecules are packed tightly and the intermolecular forces are very strong, so to break these forces a lot of efforts are needed, therefore we cannot break it easily and hence need a karate expert.

Air is a gas, it has more space in between particles. But solid block of wood is rigid, hence it is difficult to move our hands through it.
