The narrator saw the two boys, Nicola and Jacopo, selling wild strawberries at the outskirts of Verona. He thought these boys used to sell fruits for their livlihood but next morning he saw the boys doing brisk business.Then he questioned the boys about it..
The elder one, Nicola, seriously said that they do many other jobs also....

The narrator was surprised to see the boys shining shoes because he thought that they sold fruits for a living.however,when he questioned the boys regarding this,Nicola said that they also did a lot of other things for living.the boys hoped that the narrator would ask their services and in return they would ask their services and in return they would earn some good amount of money.
