This was found by Archemedis and hence known as Archemedis' Principle. This states that lower the density of the object, greater the buoyant force. this is the reason why ships float on water as its hollow from inside.

A ship is made by the principle of Archimedes . The Archimedes principle states that lower the density of an object higher be the buoyant force acting on it . The density of a ship is lowered by creating a big Hollow in it . This process proportionally decreases the density of the ship and the ship can remain afloat in the water. The weight present on the ship also define whether the ship float in water so a load line is marked which checks whether the Ship can remain freeboard.
