The Chalukyas were the dominant power in the Deccan.The Chalukyas who ruled from Badami were the western Chalukyas. The one who ruled from Kalyani are referred to as Later Western Chalukyas. The Chalukyas of Vengi are known as the Eastern Chalukyas.

The Chalukyas of Kalyani played an important role in shaping the history of Karnataka during the eleventh and twelfth century. Vikramaditya VI was the most distinguished ruler of the Kalyani Chalukya dynasty. The Badami Chalukyas were exponents of early architectural achievements. Aihole, Badami and Pattadakal were their centres of art.
