When narrator came to know that Nicola and Jacopo were working this much hard not for their own benifit or to emigrate to America but to save their sister's LIFE who was tuberculosis ridden he was totally shocked to see their zeal for work . He also understand the fact that both the brothers were very self respecting and don't want anybody sympathy then he decided to keep their secret a safe secret . and didn't utter even a word when they were going back . so , here narrator write that " he had not broken their spirit " .
