It was a cold, damp, foggy night late in the November of 1775.
mail coach struggled through deep mud, up Shooter's Hill
on the way to Dover, while the passengers walked beside it. It
was an age when even in cities people could easily be robbed by
ight; so on a lonely road men looked suspiciously at each other,
ondering if one was perhaps a highwayman. For coaches were
old, and travellers were wrapped in so many coats, capes and
arves that neither face nor form could be clearly seen.​
