A virus is a small infectious agent that replicates only inside the living cells of an organism. Viruses can infect all types of life forms, from animals and plants to microorganisms, including bacteria and archaea. Antibiotics cannot kill viruses because bacteria and viruses have different mechanisms and machinery to survive and replicate. The antibiotic has no “target” to attack in a virus. However, antiviral medications and vaccines are specific for viruses.

Viral vaccines in general use include the following:

Hepatitis A.

Hepatitis B.

Human papillomavirus (HPV)

Influenza.

Japanese encephalitis (inflammation of the brain)

Measles, mumps, and rubella.

Polio.

Rabies.
