M.hamel announced that it was his last french lesson as the order from Berlin had come stating that in the schools of Alsace and Lorraine, only German would be taught.

These were the words which were a thunderclap to little Franz because he would not be learning French anymore and he realised that he hardly knew how to read and write French.

M. Hamel mounted on his chair, and in a grave and gentle tone said, "My children, this is the last lesson I shall give you. The order has come from Berlin to teach only German in the schools of Alsace and Lorraine. The new master comes tomorrow. This is your last French lesson. I want you to be very attentive."  These were the very words which were like a thunderclap to little Franz. He was in a shock and saddened by this because this will be his last French lesson and he hardly knew how to write French. His teacher will go away tomorrow and, Franz will never see him again. He will never learn French again and was very reproached by this and felt sorry because he didn't learn his language with attention.
