what about a sponge? it is a solid yet we are able to compress it why?

sponges are solid but have a large amount of air spaces between then which enable us to compress them but we are not changing It's atomic or molecule's shape but we are only removing air from it.

sponge contains many spores between it's layers so it can hold water as well as it's compressible it's not like a complete solid kind a thing but imagine it like a few solid particles arranged with some spores
