Although India has a wide range of differences on geographical, cultural and religious aspects, Indians are always united. They tolerate their fellow beings’ customs and practices. This unity is not imposed on the country from outside. It is something that has developed in the mind of every Indian ever since the onset of civilization. The unity of a group becomes obvious on comparison with another group. Though there are differences between them, they fade out at the borders.

According to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru the diversity of India is obvious but behind its apparent diversity there is unity. The Bengalis, Marathas, Gujaratis, Tamils, Andhras, Oriyas, Assamese, Canarese, Malayalis, Sindhis, Punjabis, Pathans, Kashmiris, Rajputs have their peculiar characteristics. Yet they have the same national heritage. Their set of morals and mental qualities are distinctively Indian.

Since the dawn of civilization the unity of India has not been imposed from outside but has been something deeper. Tolerance of beliefs and customs has been practiced since early times. Every variety has been acknowledged and even encouraged.
