Parietal or oxyntic cells: They secrete hydrochloric acid (HCL) and intrinsic factor in the stomach. HCl helps in converting the inactive pepsinogen into a active pepsin enzyme. Pepsin digests the proteins into their respective peptides (peptones and proteoses).

Peptic or chief cells: they secrete pepsinogen, a protein digesting enzyme.

Mucus neck cells: They secrete mucus which helps in lubricating the mucus epithelium and thus protects it from the action of HCl.
