Animals that live in water use the oxygen that is in dissolved form and as we know that amount of dissolved oxygen in water is fairly low as compared to atmospheric oxygen. Thatswhy aquatic animals has faster rate of breathing. On the other hand, terrestrial animals use atmospheric oxygen to breath through their respiratory organs which is easy to utilize and require less energy consumption as compared to aquatic animals.

They can take oxygen in a normal way as it is presented in large amount in atmosphere but whereas water have low oxy dissolved in it to aquatic organisms have to breath faster so that they can take in the dissolved oxy from water
