You should begin by studying the composition of the population, i.e. how many men, women, boys and girls make up the neighbourhood. Thereafter, you could find out their family structures, viz. whether joint families, nuclear families or single-parent families. You may also find out about their religious beliefs, preferences etc. A word of caution: all neighbourhoods have people living in concrete buildings as well as slums and shanties; the latter group would have to be studied too for an accurate project.
After the introduction, you must study and elucidate about the nature of their professional activity, i.e. whether they run retail or wholesale businesses, work as blue-collar or white-collar employees, work in the public or private sector etc. You must also find out about their net average monthly income, and, this is very important as it determines the economic factors like disposable income, purchasing power etc.
You need to find out whether the families live in rented accommodation or have houses of their own, about their material possessions like cars, motorbikes, refrigerators, washing machines etc.
Then comes household expenses, like the monthly outgoings towards EMI for home loans, car loans, electricity etc. Add to that, average monthly household expenses, expenses towards school and college education, private tuition etc. Depending on the accuracy of your data regarding net income and gross expense/outgoing, you will arrive at the residual money left for the family or shortage of money, as the case may be. How much of it they save or borrow should be determined.
Finally, as it is an Economics project, you may now deduce or conclude about your findings.
