Following is a list of key achievements and highlights of Indian Railways since 1947 (not in strict chronological order):

Dealing with the partition of India, a humongous project given that 40% of infrastructure went to Pakistan and many routes cut off.

Introduction of diesel locomotives

First pan-India adoption of the Indian Standard Time instead of the Calcutta time

Re-organisation of 40+ rail systems into zones and divisions

Drastic increase in coach building capacity, Perambur ICF started building all-steel coaches.

Starting from Chittaranjan Motor Works, loco building began.

1950 - a mission to reconnect North-Eastern India (the Assam link) with the rest of India was completed. It was one of the reasons that we have that region as part of India today.

All of electrification

Introduction of sleeping facility for the 3rd class, instead of just the higher classes.

Restoration of several bridges and tracks, more notably that of the rail bridge that connected Rameshwaram with the rest of India in a record 46 days after a cyclone washed it away. E.Sreedharan who's more widely known for Delhi Metro, and somewhat for leading the building of Konkan Railways, was leading the Pamban reconstruction in one of his earliest assignments.

Integrated container handling facility

Export of coaches to developing countries

Computerised ticketing system

Automatic signalling based on axle counters

Wagon pooling

Major engineering feat - Konkan Railways (technically a separate organisation)

Long distance fast trains of Rajdhani class

Online ticketing system through IRCTC practically heralded the widespread use of the web in India.

Metro Rail projects (technically a separate organisation)

One of the biggest international rail consulting businesses thanks to multi-generational expertise of Indian Railways staff

Refurbishing and maintaining UNESCO heritage steam railway systems in Ooty and Shimla.
