Gases like nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide, carbon dioxide, etc., are released in the air by factories, power houses and automobile exhausts. These gases mix with rain water and form acids. Rain water, thus, becomes acidic. When this ' acid rain ' falls on buildings, made of marble( which is calcium carbonate) , the acid reacts with marble. Acid rain is the main cause of yellowing of Taj Mahal. Buildings and monuments, made of marble, ( like Tak Mahal) , thus gets affected by the action of ' acid rain.'

Hope this helps you.
